Nursery rhymes are a familiar, and yet mysterious, part of childhood. They are often a child's first encounter with the magic of words and rhythms,a first taste of poetry, the first things 'known by heart'.But where do nursery rhymes come from? They are a fascinating mix of ancient and modern verse which combine to form a heritage linking generations of parents and children. 'Early in the Morning' is Charles Causley's marvellous contribution to this treasury of nursery rhymes.Charles Causley is a highly distinguished poet and his forty new poems and rhymes perfectly blend the sound of traditional verse with his own intense originality.'Round the Corner comes Jack Fall','Good Morning,Mr Croc-o-doc-dile','Spin Me a Web,Spider',Charles Causley's poems are full of the mysterious nonsense and haunting resonances which make nursery rhymes lodge in the back of the memory of everyone. Twenty of the poems have been set to music by the composer,Anthony Castro. His songs capture the spirit of the poems, being both entertaining and very singable. They appear with full piano accompaniment and guitar chords. The book is beautifully illustrated,in full colour and in black and white,by the award-winning artist, Michael Foreman. Charles S[tanley] Causley,CBE,FRSL (b. 24 August 1917,d. 4 November 2003) was a Cornish poet, schoolmaster and writer.Noted particularly for his works' simplicity, directness and for its associations with folklore, especially when linked to his native Cornwall.Born and died in Launceston,Cornwall. After service in the Royal Navy,he was for twenty-five years a schoolteacher before becoming a full time writer. In 1967 he was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry, and he is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. The University of Exeter,Devon, conferred on him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters in 1977.Among the many volumes of his own verse is 'Figgie Hobbin',one of the most popular collections of poems for children to have been produced in the last decade (then 1986).His anthologies of poems,'The Puffin Book of Magic Verse','The Puffin Book of Salt-Sea Verse' and 'The Sun, Dancing' have been highly acclaimed. In the New Year Honours list for this year (1986),he was appointed CBE(Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to poetry. Michael Foreman is one of the most famous and versatile illustrators of modern children's books. He studied at the Royal College of Art and has written and illustrated fourteen books for children and illustrated more than forty others (then 1986).He has won many awards, including the Graphic Prize at Bologna, the Kurt Maschler Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal for 1982 and also for a 2nd time,in 1989 for 'War Boy',and the Children's Book Award in 1984.
